Welcome to our peaceful retreat in the hills above Vilcabamba

Location, Climate & Nature

Our retreat is peacefully located in the rural area of Tucu Tucu, between Vilcabamba and Malacatos in southern Ecuador. The gently sloping land offers wide views of the majestic Podocarpus mountains to the east and the fertile Malacatos valley to the north. On clear days, a distant waterfall can be seen in the hills.

At around 1800 meters elevation, the climate is pleasantly mild all year round – with a fresh breeze and soothing temperatures. Vilcabamba, known for its warm-hearted community and healthy lifestyle, is only a 7-minute drive away. Loja, the provincial capital, is 45 minutes away, and the airport in Catamayo about 1.5 hours.

San Pedro de Vilcabamba, a charming village with a friendly atmosphere, is about a 30-minute walk from the property. It offers a small shop, bus connections, a school, a health center, a village church, and a simple eatery that serves homemade Ecuadorian meals and snacks on select days – a popular gathering place for locals and travelers alike.

The region receives around 770 mm of rain per year. The property is largely flat, partially spring-fed, and stays green even during the dry season. It is fully fenced and free from through traffic – a safe and quiet environment, especially for children.

Long-term tenants are welcome, by arrangement, to grow their own vegetables in the garden or keep animals.
The water for both houses comes from a natural spring in the protected Podocarpus area – fresh, clear, and clean.
